A couple of weeks ago I read about a guy posting about how he thought trolling was so easy. I knew it wasn’t easy but I didn’t realize how hard it really was. Did I mention it’s really expensive as well. The past week I have been out three times and have barely got a break to enjoy it. I also have very little fish in the freezer for my efforts. Heck, I have been so busy I haven’t been able to take any pictures or videos.
Yesterday morning (Tuesday) I was out before light. Had everything set up. My hopes were high and I was feeling good. I finally hooked up and landed a 13 pound hen. Then a charter boat started pushing me up in the shallows and trying to catch my lead core. I had no idea what he was trying to do. I also caught a couple of bass when I was getting pushed into the shallows. All fish came on a blue spladder back J.
Today I decided to try a different port. I was hoping to fish in front of the river mouths but that wasn’t going to happen with all the boats out there. To get in close you need down-riggers and that is something I can’t afford right now. I ended up setting up somewhere else. My confidence went soaring when I was marking a ton of bait and fish. Needless to say, I made 3 passes through there without even a bite.
The sun came up and my confidence sunk minute by minute. I started to head deep and finally my reel started screaming. This fish was pulling some serious drag. I jumped on it but he was gone just as quick as I was on it. The fish hit a blue pro trol with a blue fly. Mid day the river mouth opened up so I gave it a try. The fish were definitely there according to the fish finder but none wanted to play.
This trolling isn’t as easy as it looks. I have had unreal days trolling on buddies boats. However, there is definitely an art to get real good at it. I’ll figure it out sometime though. With the fish getting closer and closer to the river mouths, I don’t know how much more trolling I’ll be doing though. The surf and rivers are my expertise.
I ended up doing a ton of exploring today. Seen some sights I wish I had my camera. Maybe next time.
I am headed to Ludington this weekend to camp and canoe with friends. My mind will be on the river salmon and I hope to get most of them their first fish on skein. I can’t wait!
I hope everyone is able to get out and enjoy our great state for Labor day weekend.
